The formula for change

By María Murillo

You’ve probably heard many times that the only constant in this life is CHANGE. Every second, everything is impacted by thousands of factors such as time, space, temperature, sound, and words—factors that maintain this unstoppable force acting and interacting in such a way that it constantly transforms life and everything in it. So why is it so hard for us to CHANGE? Why, if there’s something that prevents us from feeling happy, don’t we change it?

If you’re already happy, great! Then keep doing what you’ve been doing. If you’re not happy and you want to be, then CHANGE! Change is difficult because the mind seeks protection, it seeks security, and it finds that in everything familiar, even if it’s not satisfying, even if the results aren’t what we expect, but at least it’s been tried. It’s the famous “comfort zone” that’s often hard to leave. It’s our mind and its habits, especially those old, acquired habits, that form our BELIEFS, which are often limiting.

To achieve different things, you have to change something in your life, because if you keep doing what you’ve been doing, you’ll keep getting the same results. The mind is “accustomed” to reasoning in a certain way, and taking it out of its “comfort zone” into the unknown, the unexplored, produces FEAR. You feel insecure about taking risks by trying NEW ways of thinking, NEW SOLUTIONS, taking a NEW PERSPECTIVE, and therefore a new way of FEELING and ACTING. But daring to do it is what will allow you to experience DIFFERENT results.

The formula for change is THOUGHT + EMOTIONS + ACTIONS = RESULTS. What are your results like? Tell me about your thoughts, and then I’ll know. If your current results are optimal, then surely your actions are focused, clear, and concrete, certainly as a result of powerful, positive emotions that give you strength and that, at the same time, originate from equally positive, well-directed, and creative thoughts. If your results aren’t what you want, START by becoming aware of your thoughts and emotions (your inner world), and then, as a consequence, your actions (your outer world) will be different.

The three main factors for achieving change are:
1. Awareness
2. Knowledge
3. Understanding

Becoming aware of what’s happening to you is fundamental to understanding where that behavior comes from, who you learned it from, when, and then understanding if it truly belongs to you, and even better, if it serves you, if it contributes to your growth. If the answer is NO, then you can recognize that you have the full capacity and possibility to CHANGE it.

Dare to step out of your comfort zone. If what you dream of is truly fascinating, then leaving that zone will involve big changes! Is it worth trying?
